Onyx News
Winter 2014

It’s a sure bet that, unless you’re an avid winter sports fan, you have probably had it up to here with old man winter. We have!! Alas.

In previous issues, we have mentioned ONYX’s affiliation with many retirement communities in south-central Ontario. As of this writing, we have just booked a performance for our thirtieth location; and, look forward to not only meeting these new people, but sharing our love of music with so many of our repeat customers during the year ahead.

We are proud to say there are several communities for whom we have performed year after year. Many have honoured us with two or more bookings a year.
One of those is Hollandview Trail Retirement Community.

Hollandview Trail Retirement Residence is Aurora's newest retirement community conveniently located in the heart of Aurora, and just a short walk to the Aurora Senior Centre and great shopping! We offer Independent, Assisted Living and Respite suites. Spacious suites feature walk-in closets, and kitchenettes with full-size fridges. Outstanding amenities include an indoor heated salt-water pool, fitness centre, movie theatre and Victory Garden. We offer various programs for you to enjoy and are proud of our Signature ClubFit Program that was created specifically to suit the needs of seniors and make fitness fun! Here at Hollandview Trail every meal of the day is a taste-tempting dining experience. The moment you step through our front doors you’ll feel at home with a wealth of services at your fingertips. It’s a place where you will know you’ll fit in right from the start and every day you’ll be surrounded by people who care.

We have been promising a fresh new look for our website; and, here it is.
From this page, click on HOME and see our new look.
On all pages, our new logo appears.
Click on AVAILABILITY to see our new, easy-to-navigate calendar, which has replaced the ‘events’ page.
It will make it so much easier for visitors wanting to book us to see if we can make it to their special event.

Well, we’ve worked our way through our quartet singer profiles to the fourth and final member, Mr. Dave McCaffrey, who sings baritone, a part we joke about who sings the notes nobody else wants. We have to admit however, he does it well.

Dave was born in Newmarket at the ripe old age of zero somewhere in the distant past and has resided here for most of his life. Dave’s business also took him to Barrie and Owen Sound but no matter where he went, he was always involved with Barbershop singing. He is currently enjoying a very busy retirement.

Like Paul, Dave started singing in quartets and ensembles back in his high school days. He was introduced to Barbershop singing by a neighbor shortly thereafter and has never really been out of it since. He has not only sung in many quartets and choruses, he has directed a number of choruses over the years and still today he manages to find time to be assistant director of the Upper Canada Chordsmen Chorus here in Newmarket, a chorus he helped to found and also directed back in 1992.

Dave has also done some voice and quartet coaching, arranged some of the songs sung by ONYX Vocal Band and in this regard, is respected by his ONYX mates for his musical knowledge and is valued as a huge asset to the quartet. His latest endeavor is teaching piano to his grandson, of whom he is very proud, but who may prove to be his biggest challenge to date.

Dave has four wonderful children, three beautiful daughters and a son who we were proud to have accompany us on guitar, along with Steve Hill’s’ brother Wayne, at our last Cabaret show. It sure gave both evenings a family touch which was really great. Please give Dave a big ‘Hi Dave’ next time you see us.

Thinking ahead to spring and summer…aren’t we all?..we will once again be taking time off to re-energize. From
June 29 to August 4, you will probably find us soaking up some rays on a beach, at the cottage or trailer, or, the deck/patio.
August will be time for new music.
Keep an eye on future eNews issues for information about exciting plans.

In the meantime, have a safe and healthy 2014. Stop and smell the roses from time to time.
