Onyx News
Fall 2012

Vacations to Hawaii and Jamaica, family gatherings and a fishing trip are the focus of ONYX members this fall.

As we take a performance break, we are finding time to continue developing new music [Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day”, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” (another great wedding or anniversary song) by Elvis and “The Three Bells”, made famous by The Browns].

Also, the recent acquisition of a multi-track system will allow us to produce properly-mixed recordings for both internal learning tracks and, eventually, public consumption.

2013 is the 75th anniversary year of the Barbershop Harmony Society. It will be celebrated at the organization’s International Convention and competitions next July in Toronto…the first time since 1963. All ONYX members are proud to say we belong to the Society (two of us joined in the mid-60s), the largest all-male singing organization on the planet. The following is courtesy of Melanie Chapman, Marketing & PR Manager of the Barbershop Harmony Society

The Barbershop Harmony Society, founded in 1938 and celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 2013, is the world’s largest all-male singing organization, with nearly 25,000 members in 800 chapters in the U.S. and Canada, and an additional 4,000 members in ten other countries. Its Nashville, Tennessee headquarters is also a publishing house, with over 1,000 titles arranged in the barbershop style.

The Society produces two annual competitive events. In 2013, the 75th Anniversary International Barbershop Competition will be held in Toronto, Ontario June 30 – July 7. It will include historic displays of costumes and other artifacts dating back to 1939, as well as travelling displays from chapters across North America.

During the Midwinter Convention, the seniors quartets compete, and Harmony Foundation, Inc. produces the International Youth Chorus Festival,
which has grown since its inception
from six choruses to nearly twenty.

The Society and Harmony Foundation and Sing Canada Harmony organize dozens of Harmony Workshops and Harmony Explosion Camps every year, introducing thousands of young men and women to the joy of a cappella singing. Each August, the Society sponsors Harmony University, a week-long, world-class school taught by masters of barbershop harmony.

2013 is shaping up to be a very busy year for ONYX; with more than a dozen bookings already in place through November….retirement residences, charity events, an arts festival and a fall fair among them. Each issue of ONYXnews, starting with Winter 2013 in early February, will feature details of those upcoming performances that are open to the public, by invitation; we hope you can drop by.

Caberet

Oh! I almost forgot to mention our Cabaret.

Cab-a-ret:   an event or venue providing food, beverage and entertainment such as music, dancing, comedy, magic, mystery and more, often of an improvisational nature.

And, that’s exactly what you will experience at the April 6, 2013 Cabaret being produced by ONYX Vocal Band for your total enjoyment. Click on the poster at left or the above link to see all the details.
IMPORTANT NOTE:  tickets will be available on line via Payments after Dec. 1st.
A reminder notice will be emailed to all ONYXnews subscribers at the end of November.
You can also call 905 235 5893 anytime to place your order.

That seems like a good place to wrap this edition. The next time you receive ONYXnews, we will be smack in the middle of another Canadian winter and there will probably be snow on the ground; so, stay warm.
