Onyx News
Summer 2012

In keeping with our objective to bring a new look and feel to ONYXnews, this issue starts off with a profile of our lead singer and guitarist, Steve Hill.

Steve Hill

Stephen Kelly Hill was born. True story! The year was 1950-something, in Newmarket.

Now for the real story. Steve grew up…well, kinda…also in Newmarket. Somewhere along this journey, he developed a rather warped sense of humour which never seems to have any limits and of which his ONYX mates are the constant benefactors (?).

Steve picked up his first guitar around the age of 14; ever since he has been amazing himself and others with his relaxed, entertaining style. It’s that easy approach that has contributed to ONYX’s uniqueness. Son Matthew is following in dad’s musical footsteps and Steve’s lifemate, Debbie, has her hands full as an owner of The Maid’s Cottage, a very popular dining spot on Newmarket’s Main Street.

Say “Hi, Steve”, the next time you see ONYX performing.

Speaking of performing - after an enjoyable summer break, we’re back at it again with two gigs in late August and bookings through to November 2013. There are still spots open between mid-April and the end of June. And, as usual, there’s always room for a special event like a birthday, anniversary, wedding, etc.

A couple of previous issues mentioned the eleven new songs we added between September 2011 and June this year. As we start up another ONYX year, we are already working on our newest custom chart, by contemporary a cappella arranger Deke Sharon: Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day”. We can’t wait to share this one with all of you.

A feature on another of our ‘partners’, “Neighbourhood Network”, follows:

Neighbourhood Network is a not for profit community organization established in 2008 by Belinda Stronach and Magna International. Neighbourhood Network aims to support community organizations in Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury by linking community resources with the many diverse community needs.

Neighbourhood Network also celebrates and coordinates volunteerism and organizes several community programs, including: Tree Planting, Food Drive, Snow Removal for Seniors, Holiday Gift Drive and the Give Back Awards for students. To date, Neighbourhood Network has nearly 4000 volunteers and is partnered with 188 local organizations.

Our next issue will include a feature on the 75th anniversary (2013) of the Barbershop Harmony Society www.facebook.com/2013Toronto and details of ONYX’s third stage show April 6, 2013. More details about both events will be in the fall 2012 newsletter.
